Recommended! Blood on the River provides a rare in-depth look at the political vision of enslaved people at the dawn of the Age of Revolution and introduces us to a set of real characters, vividly drawn against the exotic tableau of a riverine world of plantations, rainforest, and Carib allies who controlled a vast South American hinterland. Before the story begins, Samuel's mother died, making him an orphan. I used to read this to my 4th grade students and now I am reading it to my 4th grade daughter. It is the story of a young orphaned boy who becomes the page of Captain John Smith, and accompanies him to the New World in 1607. The story covers just before he came to the New World through the Starving Time (though he was at Point Comfort and so did not experience those terrible months the way those who stayed in James Town did). Shadows at Jamestown (The Virginia Mysteries), Written in Bone: Buried Lives of Jamestown and Colonial Maryland (Exceptional Social Studies Titles for Intermediate Grades), 1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving: A New Look at Thanksgiving (National Geographic). Some parts of the book was sad, and unfortunate, but it really made you think of everything these people suffered for, for a chance at a better life.
