When a call comes in that Alvaro is headed in their direction, they squabble about how they're going to arrest him. Rita's murder has been named one of the most shocking television deaths of all time. For Dexter, his experience of love and sexual intimacy comes from the women who recognize and appreciate his monstrousness and his humanity. The gloomy sentiment behind these deaths usually had to do with the characters being those we had come to care for, but there were also those characters we felt bad for because they didn’t deserve to die the way they did. As they approach the door, there is no answer and Doakes looks in through the blinds, which results in him stating, "Motherfuck!" He compares the messy blood spatter on the walls to a finger painting. Dexter breaks into The Shipping Yard, suspecting it's where Rudy took Deb. But he too leaves her life tragically when he's murdered. “I believe that one of Doakes’ fatal flaws is that he is a lone wolf,” King said. King discussed the possibility of Doakes returning in Season 3 (the timing of which is in doubt because of the writers strike). Perhaps making it even sadder is the chance that the Trinity Killer might have told Rita about Dexter’s truth before he killed her, which means Rita died realizing her married life had been a complete lie.
Nobody goes to Doakes' funeral. As contributor Christopher Ryan writes, "For me, the seductiveness of Dexter revolves around the fact that he represents that tipping point where the two extremes of human behavior connect, completing the circuit that describes human consciousness. As the narrative progresses from the beginning to the ending of Dexter, we see him go from someone who must imitate human emotion to a man who actually does feel and comes to truly care about those closest to him.
