Primarily for accountants and aspiring accountants to learn about and discuss their career choice. You're reaching the point where it's going to become more difficult to change paths once you start down one. But I really doubt the expertise of big 4 IT audit helping to prepare you for that. IT Audit is a lot of internal audit, risk and compliance type stuff, and IT security roles I'd imagine. I like both so far, but in a year or so I'll want to move to big 4 and I imagine I'll have to specialize at that point.
The question I would pose to yourself is what makes you think IT audit would be more interesting? Anyone know of what's out there for anyone wanting to leave IT audit? Thanks for the reply. If you want the controller path big 4 audit manager is the common way into industry to set you up for that role after a few years a notch lower. The demand for IT auditors far exceeds the supply. i cannot take another screenshot or i will die. Maybe CIO route? A solid two to three years’ experience would put you as a “certified” Big 4 auditor, with all your fundamentals set. Financial audit is typical accounting positions exit opps, like senior accountant, assistant controller, and controller.
The main tracks for exit opportunities seem to be internal audit, project management, and security. I was able to get involved with the data analytics group where I then split my time with IT audit. IT Auditors I've seen typically only work at huge technology heavy complex pre-IPOs, public companies, and firms. I would agree with Potatogun, becoming a CFO or Controller is not really a transition from IT Audit. Did you have prior IT experience? Advice and questions welcome. I’m very thankful for my job, but I keep thinking to myself, what next? CIO is certainly a potential one though still relatively uncommon. I'm currently a Big 4 first year associate (4 months in) doing IT Audit and don't enjoy it at all. I live around Silicon Valley and there seems to be an endless demand around here for IT Audit, they simply can't staff enough roles it seems. Seems like IT audit is what you make of it. I'm enjoying the work a lot more, and I'm now on the information security track (mgr of info sec, director/vp of info sec, ciso, etc.). I sent you a message! Just a guess, but I would think you're going to come up with different answers and you need to evaluate which of these answers you want to work towards. As others' have indicated, IT auditors do enjoy a higher work life balance and higher salary, at least in the Big 4, given their advisory status. IT/GRC consulting is an option. i was actually looking at moving into IT audit first, since i had some audit experience. People generally don't leave IT audit to eventually be controllers. Worked as an IT auditor at Big 4 for three years, primarily doing IT SOX audits, SOC 1 and 2 reports, and IT risk transformation engagements. All of the Big 4 firms in my area have had a permanent job listing for senior IT auditors for over two years now.
I really hate the work (mostly being an auditor in general) and I want to work in a more consulting style environment. If this trend keeps up, you'd have to think they will need to start offering more $$$. I'm just about to complete my 2nd year at a Big 4 IT Audit position.
