We used Transtint dye - dark walnut. All content, photos, and products on this site are created and produced by myself; Kaitlyn Ray, unless otherwise noted. Dip your rag (or paper towel!) I would like the tongue and groove to be a bit lighter (not not so light it looks like natural) and the beams to be a bit darker. So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and get ready to learn everything you ever wanted to know about staining wood! I stripped a red oak bar top that had numerous coats of oil based poly in order to get it more like our white oak floor and table. I pride myself in the significant research I complete before attempting a project, or experiment, but I always recommend some additional research and extra precautions before attempting any of the projects I discuss. I have used the weathered wood one in the past (for this project), but I hadn’t tried either of the other two, and I’m just in love with them. Dyes are frequently added to clear finishes, which are then sprayed or brushed on in thin layers. For a lighter option a good compliment to those darker stains would be honey maple or if that is too light the special walnut.
Allow drying at least 2 hours.
Please, before attempting any of the projects mentioned on my site, consult with a professional if you are unsure of the safety or accuracy of my tips. After the wood is covered with the stain, allow it to sit for 2-3 minutes (check the back of your can for timing if you’re using anything other than the Varathane Fast-Dry stain – other stains may require a longer time). Please try again. It may inspire me to refinish the remaining 80’s looking oak-or not! If you’re using a hard wood, start at 80-grit. Currently, Varathane’s Wood Accelerators come in three colors (Weathered Wood, Charred, and Aged Wood), with more hopefully coming soon (I heard a rumor about a light colored one that I can’t wait to try!). Minwax Jacobean is a rich, dark brown color. If you were looking for a different distress technique I’ve easily explained 7 Distressing Techniques to help! One of the most popular wood stain colors I found was Varathane’s Briarsmoke.
As far as fencing, stay tuned because I’ll be staining our fence next month! On the bottom right, I used a water-based poly and you can see how it changed the color more than the lacquer (which just made the color richer). 90 $27.95 $27.95.
