The safety is also in a bit of a weird spot right up on the right hand side of the receiver. I knew that this rifle is an autoloader — even though the author didn’t actually say so. That might have something to do with it. Ten rounds have never been so much fun. I saw massive vertical stringing in targets shot at 50 yards that resulted in 3″+ groups. Or a zombie-riddled city.

That’s an extra 2″ of receiver and it makes the gun a bit longer than it really needs to be. The Model 64 is a crisp, clean-firing.22LR from rimfire leader Savage Arms. I was able to shoot dimes consistently vs the required quarter at 50ft. The 64 operates on a simple blowback action that's dependable and cheap to use for plinkers and beginning shooters. Go ahead buy your 10/22 and see how much you sink into it. And the Marlin has a good enough reputation for accuracy and function to be the “Plan B” for folks making up a Liberty Training Rifle. I now installed a Barska 3-7X 32 scope and sighted it in at 30 yards and it doing what I expected. Its affordable price and outstanding reliability have made it a family favorite and a natural go-to for a kid’s first rifle.

Some people out there have reported issues stemming from bad magazines, while others need to keep their Savage 64’s well oiled. Very fun to shoot. But don’t be a gun snob. If you are on a budget and want a good plinking/hunting rifle, the Savage is the best bang for buck provided you have some patience to get it tuned.
The trigger pull starts out with a fair amount of take up stopped by an extremely spongy zone (that can’t really be described as a wall), and once you pull your way through this spongy zone the rifle goes off. For $150, I can shoot all the varmints, go hunting for small game, and plink away with the cheap ammo! I think the real competition for the Marlin 60 (in the cheap tack-driving .22 category) is the Marlin 795.
If you are prepping for post-apocalyptic survival, then you know iron sights are the way to go, because they don’t require batteries like red dots. That’s probably not a smart thing to advertise… . Usually I sign of with something along the lines of “check one out” or something of that nature. As the standard 64F is Savage’s least-expensive autoloader, it only made sense to select it as the company's basis for a takedown firearm.

The 21-inch, stainless steel barrel is perfectly balanced to the rugged black matte synthetic stock. Best and Worst Feature: The best feature of this rifle isn’t technically a feature of the gun itself but is instead the price. Out of the box it’s a better shot than my stock 10/22 but that’s just my opinion. I would say I’ve got close to 2000 rounds through it. I didn’t even remember what brand it was. It’s not terrible to access, but either you need to break your grip and use your thumb, or use your index finger to flick it off. This cuts out a few manufacturing steps, as well as a fair amount of parts. The Marlin 60, and Marlin 795 can both be had for approximately the same price. This rifle shoots very well out of the box. Although often unexpressed in speech, as a "64" it is almost always followed by a single series letter. So I broke the front sight post off my Saage Model 64 .22 and the rear sight is kind of loose. Savage Model 64 series is a semi-automatic .22 LR rifle made by Savage Arms in Canada. Never like that mag sticking out like that. Situational awareness, people.
There is literally nothing offered for the 64F; not even an extended magazine. It is considered by many users to be more accurate "out of the box" than some more expensive rifles. (Plan A, if you absolutely insist on a last shot bolt hold-open.). The mags for it suck something awful. Again, no problems. I have a bolt action Savage in .22LR, old enough not to have the Savage accu-trigger. It’s hard not to consider such a low price for such a great rifle the best feature of the Savage 64F. I keep a few AR’s handy too . The standard shops online are all out of backordered, EBay had some for 25 and up. The straight mags are a bitch with sharp edges.. but they are relatively cheap..

No marginal money savings is worth that. Now I’m driving tacks! Time. The mags suck. .not so much. If it does not work with what it came with, it don’t work with nuttin. Just NEVER unscrew the seat cup. Overall the Savage 64F is a great rifle. The Ruger rotary mags are better and they sit clean and flush. You’re correct on the magazine. I tore a tab off of a cartridge box and inserted it at the rear (butt end) of the magazine housing, forcing the magazine to rest in it’s most verticle position. I trust that some of you have very accurate Savage 64’s. Roughly half of the rounds in my magazine would not feed properly and the bolt’s momentum would bend the bullet in the case rendering the round completely useless. This one.
There is not a single magazine that I have purchased that has needed to be played with to make reliable or to keep the head of the bullet from being shaved by the sharp edges on the ramp. They also have the largest selection of aftermarket parts for the 62/64 I’ll take a Marlin 795 any day of the week. i love the fact that noone seems to understand that this rifle has been around for like 50 years. This one ran like a top: 100% reliable through about 500 rounds in a single range session using all sorts of different ammo. I had ordered two more 10 round mags but following the directions that came with the new mags having to do with breakin { load and keep loaded, then unload ammo after 4 days) all 3 mags have performed great. I’ve used CCI Stingers out to 100 yds. The rifle does come with sling mounts that can be used for a sling or bipod as well as a dove tail rail that allows you to easily mount an optic. Chrono missed 1 round. I’m sure it’s a coincidence, but I’ve never shot a 10/22 that didn’t jam a lot. That is definitely helped by the free floating barrel (although once removed for cleaning it can change). I only experienced two failures-to-eject during the entire 575-round test, which is amazing for a gun that only carries an MSRP of $249.

We ended up coming home with a Savage - Stevens Model 62 in .22lr and a Simmons 3x9x40 scope. The only way the trigger could be worse on the Savage 64F is if it weren’t there. For such an awesome and accurate rifle you get everything that the 10/22 offers besides aftermarket customization which I personally didn’t care about at all. Got two of these S64s, one in wood, one in plastic. Shoot great. In fact, there’s no real discussion about the action at all. Three of us southpaws went in on a group buy. Either of these will do and won't let you down. LOL
It does a great job at surprising you while you slowly increase the force that you are pulling with, but from a company known for their amazing triggers this one leaves you wishing that Savage had focused just a little more on it.
