The character Aunt Jemima originated from a 19th century minstrel show, and was at one point portrayed by a former slave. “Then she say, “But why booze?” And I says, “Sell what you know”, and I know about booze.”. Uncle Jemima. It’s hard to fathom that in 2020 a billion dollar food conglomerate would have a racist mammy caricature as the face of their pancake and syrup brands. The recent fuss about Aunt Jemima’s syrup (and Uncle Ben’s rice) shows there are still many folks who don’t get it and, more importantly, don’t want to get it because getting it might require changing beliefs and behaviour.
... You might think I’d have something to say here about dialect, stereotypes, or the conflation of Uncle Remus and Aunt Jemima.
And yet, even after Quaker Oats was purchased by PepsiCo in 2001, the brand and its associated imagery remained in tact. On Wednesday, Quaker Oats acknowledged the racial history surrounding its 130-year-old Aunt Jemima brand and announced it would be launching a rebranded name and packaging later this year. Mr. and Mrs., followed by the last name, were titles reserved for whites so aunt and uncle, followed by the first name of the individual, was used. In just five seconds, Morgan slapped the viewer with three well-known racist stereotypes about American Blacks. Instead, it was common for them, when speaking either to or about these Black people, to call them the N-word first, then their first name. Who the hell don’t?
Twenty years later, the parody has lost none of its sting. In the antebellum (that’s the technical word used to describe the American South before the Civil War, so now you know why the popular country band Lady Antebellum recently made the recent change to Lady A) and afterwards, aunt and uncle were honorifics conferred onto older Southern Blacks after a lifetime in service roles in wealthier white households. Tracy Jamel Morgan (born November 10, 1968) is an American actor and comedian, best known for his work on the TV series Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock on which he plays Tracy Jordan.. Morgan was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of musician Jimmy Morgan. In 1990, Big Daddy Kane specifically referenced the problematic nature of the brand in the Public Enemy song “Burn Hollywood Burn”. Once Southern white children became adults, they no longer had to use aunt or uncle.
Tracy Morgan even created his own version of the character, Uncle Jemima, for a memorable sketch on Saturday Night Live. In a legendary Saturday Night Live skit from 2000, Tracy Morgan parodied Aunt Jemima in a mock commercial, selling Uncle Jemima's Malt Liquor. A decade later, Spike Lee parodied Aunt Jemima in his 2000 film Bamboozled alongside other stereotypical Black Antebellum South characters. Uncle Jemima, on the other hand, is a completely different story. Beginning in the 1960s, Civil Rights leaders and Black advocacy groups called on Quaker Oats to cease usage of the brand, citing its racial tropes and glorification of Antebellum plantation life. In a legendary Saturday Night Live skit from 2000, Tracy Morgan parodied Aunt Jemima in a mock commercial, selling Uncle Jemima's Malt Liquor. Appearing: Tags: Video.
